The Week in Review

Happy Friday!

I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 118th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.

Paying Respects to U.S. Marine and Chandler Resident Alec Langen

U.S. Marine Alec Langen of Chandler was involved in a tragic helicopter accident near San Diego. The crash took his life as well as 4 other American patriots. Let us pray for these selfless heroes and their loved ones.

Voting to Impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas

After nearly three years of deliberation and investigation, Speaker Mike Johnson brought the long-awaited impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the House floor. The resolution focused on two main articles. The first is Secretary Mayorkas’ willful and systematic refusal to comply with his obligations under the Immigration and Nationality Act and the second is Secretary Mayorkas’ breach of public trust.

Unfortunately—in a 214-216 vote—the impeachment resolution failed to pass in the House.

While this week’s vote did not produce the outcome we wanted, the fight is far from over. The House will hold another impeachment vote soon as we will have more Republicans—who are recovering from personal matters—back in Washington.

I was the first Member of Congress to call for Mayorkas’s impeachment, and I will continue to fight for his removal from public office.

In addition to impeaching DHS Secretary Mayorkas, Congress can—and should—defund his salary and initiatives through the power of the purse. We must use the budget as leverage to hold this Administration accountable. DHS Secretary Mayorkas has neglected to protect our nation by allowing the invasion at our southern border to continue. His dereliction of duty needlessly puts Americans’ lives at risk from crimes committed by illegal aliens. He must be impeached.

Defending President Trump Against "Insurrectionist" Claims

I joined Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s (R-NY) press conference on their resolution to declare that President Trump “did not engage in insurrection.”

President Trump is not an insurrectionist. But the crazies on the Left—supported by their accomplices in the media—are trying to remove him from our election ballots. The Democrats are attempting to disenfranchise millions of Americans by preventing them from voting for the front-runner candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Fortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court appears skeptical of that effort—and for good reason.

A so-called insurrectionist wouldn’t say things like go "peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard” during the January 6th protests. A so-called insurrectionist wouldn’t propose sending 10,000 National Guardsmen to protect the nation’s capital only to be denied by the DC Mayor.

Ironically, the Democrats calling President Trump an insurrectionist have spewed so-called insurrectionist rhetoric themselves.

I thank Congressman Gaetz and Congresswoman Stefanik for leading the charge in protecting President Trump and our constitutional republic. Click the image below to watch my full remarks:

Introducing Legislation to Responsibly Fund Israel

I introduced the Fiscally Responsible Israel Supplemental Act, 2024—legislation that would provide $17.6 billion in military and security assistance to Israel and pay for that spending by repealing the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA)’s Department of Commerce “slush fund” created during debt ceiling negotiations last summer.

This assistance includes funding to reinforce Israel’s defense systems, replenish U.S. military operations in the region, and protect U.S. personnel and citizens in Israel. On October 7th, Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel and massacred more than 1,400 Israelis, while taking hundreds more hostage over the month. The House of Representatives previously voted against a security supplemental for Israel as the package offered no spending offsets to fund the aid.

Israel remains America’s greatest ally and deserves to be protected from barbaric actors like Hamas. In November, Speaker Johnson paired Israel aid with the necessary offset on the floor, but Senator Schumer torpedoed the package in the Senate. The House shouldn’t stop there and cave to Senator Schumer’s demands for a clean spending package. My legislation grants an opportunity to financially support Israel without having to borrow money.

Leading Effort to Preserve Evidence Related to Disturbing DC Abortion Case

Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government Chip Roy (R-TX) and I sent a letter to Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith in response to a report that the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) has advised the Washington D.C. Medical Examiner to dispose of the remains of five preborn children whose bodies were reportedly recovered from the Washington Surgi-Clinic. Based on evidence collected at the time of recovery, these children may have been viable, and likely suffered severely painful partial-birth abortion procedures. Murdering a child through a partial-birth abortion is a crime under federal law. Yet, for two years, both the MPD and DOJ have ignored this case. The House Judiciary Committee maintains jurisdiction over criminal law and federal law enforcement in the nation’s capital pursuant to House Rule X.

All life is precious, and any violator of the Partial-Birth Abortion Act must be held accountable. The MPD and DOJ’s investigation was insufficient and inadequate. The DOJ’s effort to dispose of these bodies without conducting an investigation is malpractice. These bodies must be preserved. I applaud Congressman Roy for spearheading this effort with me to protect life. Americans deserve to know what happened to these five innocent children and the rogue actors involved must be brought to justice. I remain hopeful that the Mayor and Chief reconsider their decision to dispose of the remains of these children.

Tanking the Open Borders Senate "Border Bill"

President Biden, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senator James Langford (R-OK) released their highly anticipated border security legislation titled the‘‘Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024.”  The 370-page, $118 billion package can only be described as the worst border bill ever and makes matters worse than they already are. It is hard to believe, but this package was even more terrible than the Gang of Eight legislation of 2013.

For months, thearchitects of this bill refused to release its text to us but would often go on social media and television advertising it. There are many poor elements found in this bill, but here are some I must highlight:

  • The bill provided $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, while only providing $20 billion to our southern border.
  • The bill provides automatic work permits to illegal aliens—another incentive for them to come here illegally.
  • The bill permits 5,000 illegal alien encounters a day for 7 days in a row before shutting down the border. Former Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said that 1,000 illegal alien encounters a day is considered a “crisis.”
  • The bill grants $2.3 billion to corrupt and open borders NGOs who facilitate “catch and release” programs.
  • The bill codifies so-called “catch and release” policies by requiring certain apprehended aliens be released from custody while awaiting their immigration proceedings.

Thankfully, due to pressure from House Republicans, the bill ultimately died. This was a monumental win for our nation.
