Michigan retailers advised against collecting empty beer, wine, soda containers during COVID-19 outbreak
The Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association, Midwest Independent Retailers Association and Michigan Retailers Association have advised retailers to stop taking back empty beer, wine and soda containers during the COVID-19 outbreak. In a statement they said: “The COVID-19 virus can live on surfaces for several days, putting our employees and their loved ones at risk each time they collect empty beverage containers. This is part of our ongoing effort to ensure our employees are able to carry out their jobs in the safest manner possible while doing our part to comply with the governor’s recent orders.”
Online shoppers increasingly concerned about fake goods
According to a new report from Red Points, 73 percent of consumers will increase their online shopping due to the COVID-19. However, 68 percent of U.S. consumers are worried that there might be an increase in counterfeit or poor-quality products sold online as a result of the pandemic.
Lester Jones, chief economist at the National Beer Wholesalers Association, anticipates an increase in demand for cans, bottles and related packaging as breweries look to package the beer they have on hand and get it to customers. “There’s going to be a rush in the supply chain to get more cans and bottles so they can recoup something in the off-premise for beer that’s already made.” He also noted that the supply chain helps stock shelves with products other than just beer. Beer distributors also deliver soda, bottled water, juices, teas and other non-alcoholic beverages that are also in high demand during a public-health emergency.
