🚔 Stop Cop City 🚔

Stop Cop City promo image

For nearly six months, the City of Atlanta has refused to count 116,000 signatures for the Cop City referendum. The referendum would put Cop City on the ballot and Let the People Decide. Mayor Dickens is blocking the referendum review process and denying Atlanta citizens their right to vote.

Today, the Atlanta City Council will vote on Ordinance 24-O-1007, which will formalize a transparent and fair process for current and future referendums in Atlanta. The ordinance follows best-practices from across the nation and was constructed by leading voting rights and election litigators. It ain’t over till THE PEOPLE DECIDE!

💡 Black Socialist Spotlight 💡

Photo of A. Philip Randolph

A. Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was an American labor unionist, civil rights activist, and socialist politician. In 1925, he organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first predominantly African American labor union. In 1963, Randolph co-organized the March on Washington.

In 1925, as founding president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Randolph began organizing that group of Black workers and, at a time when half the affiliates of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) barred Blacks from membership, took his union into the AFL. Despite opposition, he built the first successful Black trade union; the brotherhood won its first major contract with the Pullman Company in 1937.

A. Philip Randolph died on May 16, 1979. Activist Bayard Rustin stated, “No individual did more to help the poor, the dispossessed and the working class in the United States and around the world than A. Philip Randolph”.1

🧤 Winter Clothing Drive: Distribution Event! ❄️

Winter Clothing Drive email header

Atlanta DSA is running our annual Winter Clothing Drive! While the City of Atlanta spends tens of millions of dollars building a fake Cop City training ground, the real citizens of Atlanta remain housing and food insecure. We've collected warm clothing through our clothing drive -- now we need to help distribute it to keep Atlantans safer and warmer this winter.

Come to Woodruff Park, 91 Peachtree St, Atlanta, GA 30303 on Saturday, February 10th at 12:00 PM to help us give back and protect our homeless neighbors until our city government guarantees housing for all.

✊ Save the Date: Union Reform 101 ✊

All over the country, workers are organizing on the shop floor to build strong, militant, and democratic unions. From Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) to Unite all Workers for Democracy (UAWD), the impact of union reform movements is loud and clear. Labor union reform caucuses have helped elect union leadership that's willing to put up a fight - helping Teamsters secure a historic union contract, and leading UAW to launch an unprecedented strike led by the rank-and-file.

Join Atlanta DSA's labor committee on Sunday, February 25 for an info session and workshop on union reform caucuses. We'll cover topics like: What is the goal of union reform? What are some examples of successful union reform movements? How can you get involved in your local union reform efforts?

This workshop is open to anyone, although union members are strongly encouraged to attend.

🌹Attend Labor Notes Conference in April!🌹

The Labor Notes Conference is being held this April 19-21 in Chicago, and Atlanta DSA is offering partial scholarships for members to attend. If you're interested in attending to represent Atlanta DSA, please fill out this application by midnight on Friday, Feb 16th. We will aim to get back to applicants by Tuesday Feb 20th.

Including fights and housing, it's expected to cost around $600 for each attendee. Priority will go to applicants who cannot afford to pay full cost, are unable to receive a scholarship elsewhere, are active in Atlanta DSA’s labor work, or are a union member or organizing in a strategic industry. The Steering Committee will approve applications before the May 1st Early Bird Registration deadline.

Read more about the Labor Notes Conference and sign up to attend here!

✊ Senate Bill 362 is Wrong for Georgia ✊

Senate Bill 362 attempts to prevent Georgia’s working families from organizing their workplace.

Let’s be clear: What this bill wants to do — prohibit Georgia businesses receiving state economic subsidies from voluntarily recognizing a union in their workplace — is federally illegal.

Voluntary recognition of representation is protected by the NLRA. NLRA protections and prohibitions cannot be circumvented by state legislation. The fundamental right of voluntary recognition has been upheld time and time again in courtrooms.

Senate Bill 362 is an illegal attack on working people and private businesses in Georgia.

When workers are asking for basic rights and are supported by the employer, the state government stepping in to ban that recognition simultaneously harms workers and takes away individual freedoms from business owners.

A majority of Americans would join a union right now if they could, and working people across all sectors of the economy are organizing like never before. The new era of the Georgia labor movement is here and S.B. 362 is evidence that Gov. Kemp and his political cronies are scared of workers getting their fair share.
