John,

I wanted to begin our celebration of Black History Month by celebrating the abolitionist hero Anna Murray, whose courageous story the Black historian Sally McMullin recently recounted:

As a free woman, Murray met Frederick Bailey, an enslaved man in their home state of Maryland.

After some convincing, Murray won Bailey over to her plan of helping him escape to freedom. With a handmade sailor outfit she had sewn for him, Murray gave Bailey the money to travel to New York disguised as a sailor.

Once he arrived in New York, Bailey changed his last name to Douglass to avoid being recaptured. He also sent for Murray to join him.

They were married under their new names — Frederick Douglass and Anna Murray Douglass.

Through 44 years of marriage, the births of five children, and countless weeks spent apart, Frederick traveled the country giving abolitionist speeches and Anna established an Underground Railroad headquarters in their Rochester, New York, home.

The Douglass family were equal partners in the abolitionist struggle, and they are but one family whose courage pushed our country to better live up to the ideals embedded in our Constitution.

In the words of former First Lady Michelle Obama, “History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”

This Black History Month, let us celebrate Black achievement, Black joy, and renew our work propelling anti-racist values and fighting systemic injustices against all Americans.

Let us give life to hope once again.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
