Hi John,

Thursday marked the start of Black History Month – an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the contributions that Black Americans have made to our country's history and communities.

We reflect on centuries of dark history and injustices that Black people have faced in America. We also celebrate progress and the incredible impact that Black Americans have had on culture, science, education, politics and activism, and much more.

But we would not be truly honoring Black History Month unless we focus on the work that we still need to do – we must turn toward action.

I am fortunate to serve in the same chamber that former Rep. Elijah Cummings made an incredible mark on. A few years before I was sworn into office, he said: "When we're dancing with the angels, the question we'll be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?"

The fight for justice and equality is far from over, and we can't sit it out on the sidelines.

We have to make sure that everyone can vote in our democracy. We have to fight for equal access to affordable education, quality healthcare, and good jobs. We have to reject the idea of extremist, dangerous culture wars and embrace the fact that our country succeeds when our systems are set up for everyone.
