During Black History Month, Governor Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S.
Youngkin honor and recognize the indelible ways Black Virginians have helped to
shape Virginia’s story and continue to shape our future.

Governor Youngkin issued an official proclamation calling on Virginians to
join him in celebrating Black History Month and commemorated “the historic
firsts in political leadership in our Commonwealth with the election of
Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, Speaker Don Scott, and Senate
President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas.”

Earlier this week, First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin joined other leaders in
Roanoke, Virginia to launch “It Only Takes One” — a first-of-its-kind, fentanyl
awareness pilot program designed to equip adults with accurate information to
elevate awareness about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning while highlighting
resources available. A collaboration between the First Lady’s office, the
Office of the Attorney General, the Virginia Department of Health, and the
Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the pilot is bringing together numerous
stakeholders for an all-hands-on-deck approach to building awareness of the
dangers of fentanyl. Among those in attendance for Tuesday’s press conference
and Stakeholder's Roundtable were the First Lady, Attorney General Miyares,
Secretary Littel of the Virginia Department of Health, the Mayor of Roanoke,
leadership from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, representation from
Roanoke’s first responder and recovery communities, the city’s Police Chief and
Sheriff, as well as local educators and nonprofit organizations. Also present
were victims and family members from across the Commonwealth who have lost
loved ones to fentanyl poisoning. The First Lady expressed her gratitude to
Roanoke — a city with the highest number of overdose deaths of any major
metropolitan area in Virginia, but one with a remarkable infrastructure of care
— and all who are committed to making a difference and saving lives.

Families who have suffered the excruciating loss of a loved one to fentanyl
poisoning are making #homehistory through their unwavering advocacy on behalf
of those who have passed. Using art as therapy, Virginia artist Debbie Jo Evans
created ‘Forgotten Fentanyl Victims of Virginia’ to honor the thousands like
her son, Jamie Evans, who have fallen victim to the tragic epidemic. The piece
is included in the Art Experience at the Executive Mansion, available to view
in the Ladies' Parlor and on the Executive Mansionwebsite
<[link removed]>. The First Lady
recently gathered in the Executive Mansion alongside administration leadership
to listen to mothers, fathers and grandmothers share their personal stories and
hopes for the Commonwealth’s future regarding legislation intended to eradicate
illicit and illegal drugs.
