Friend, we recently learned that at least two U.S. senators got private briefings on the coronavirus threat, sold millions of dollars in stocks right before the market crashed, then lied to the public about the Trump administration being prepared for the response.

Even with the dysfunction and toxicity and gridlock we have grown accustomed to in a Congress that is totally captured and corroded by big money, this felt like an astounding betrayal.

We’re in the middle of a global pandemic that will require all of us working together and showing up for one another.

I’m getting calls from local business owners who don’t know how they’re going to make payroll. From teachers whose schools are closed and who don’t know when they’ll get to see their students again. From nurses and healthcare providers who are on the front lines for our communities who don’t have masks or personal protective equipment.

And while our economy has ground to a halt and thousands of our fellow Americans are facing coronavirus, while millions of people have seen their lives upended, these senators took the opportunity to profit.

I've talked a lot in this campaign about fixing our democracy and ending the corruption in Congress.

It is imperative that we get Congress back to working for the people, not the special interests.

We have to attack the entire corrupt political culture head-on -- reverse Citizens United, tax the money that PACs use for political activities, and close the revolving lobbyist door, and, yes, let’s absolutely ban the practice of members of Congress holding public stock.

Our elected leaders are supposed to represent people -- actual human beings with bills to pay, healthcare costs, and dreams to pursue. This is a moment to truly commit to making the change we need.
