Can you guess what national parks have in common with the clothes you’re wearing? The answer is PLASTIC.

Plastic pollution is more than just the 170 trillion plastic particles floating at sea. It’s found everywhere on the planet, from the tallest mountains to Antarctic snow. It’s in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and our own bodies. 5 Gyres is committed to supporting solutions that reduce the harm of plastic pollution, and today, we’re sharing two projects that YOU can get involved in!

PLASTIC-FREE PARKS 🏞️

Today, we published the 2023 Plastic-Free Parks report, revealing findings from our nationwide TrashBlitz effort in national parks and federal lands. Unsurprisingly, plastic was the top material found for the second year in a row, making up of 66% of waste documented. Furthermore, the majority of items were single-use plastic — designed to use once and throw away. The report outlines key findings and offers recommendations to reduce the harm of plastic pollution in our protected spaces.
