616 days. That’s how long it’s been since I last kissed my beautiful daughter Jackie goodbye at a school awards ceremony.

That’s how long it’s been since I watched my whole world walk into the entrance of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX, and never walk out.

My little girl, Jackie, was just 9 years old. She had the biggest heart, was so full of life, and would go out of her way to help anyone in need.

But when a gunman stormed her school with an assault weapon – the police in my community stood by and waited for 77 minutes while my beautiful daughter, incredible niece Annabell, 17 other children, and 2 teachers were slaughtered in their school.

Now, the Department of Justice just released a chilling report detailing the failures by the Uvalde police chief and other leadership that allowed the shooter to slaughter so many. Here’s what they found:

The police knew the shooter had an AR-15 – and said they were too scared to intervene.

If police are too scared of assault weapons to protect our children from them, why are they still able to roam our streets?

This report made one thing abundantly clear: Our work to ban assault weapons once and for all has never been more important.
