We're wishing you all the best this week.
We're about halfway through the Trump Administration's 15 days to slow the spread of coronavirus. Each day brings a tremendous amount of new information and updates from federal, state, and local officials.
As always, we're wishing for the continued health and safety for you, your family, and your community. We'll continue to bring you the news you'll want to know -- starting with these updates for the upcoming week.
The left remains committed to not letting a good crisis "go to waste" as they try to politicize coronavirus relief. "Democrats blocked a massive $1.8 trillion stimulus spending bill to protect the U.S. economy and provide relief to American families who are suffering as a result of the coronavirus outbreak." [Read the full story from the Daily Wire.] After several days of bipartisan negotiations, Democrats in Congress decided to up-end an emergency relief bill to help Americans in the face of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The supposed goal is for a final round of negotiations to finish today. But it's sad to see some Democrats want to use this crisis as a time to push their political agenda.
As Guy Benson, political editor for Townhall, reported via Twitter this morning, negotiations from the left include demands for more powers for unions and tax credits to support the green lobby -- two big liberal constituencies.
As we've said for weeks, this is an American issue, not a partisan issue. It's time for our elected officials to stop politicizing this crisis and prioritize the American people, just like President Trump is doing every day.
Some in the media will use any pretense to criticize President Trump. "What doesn’t make sense is why the press is bashing Trump for his positivity on this potential treatment. It’s not like Trump is selling supplements as a cure. Rather, Trump is telling Americans exactly what other countries are telling clinicians treating those with COVID-19: that early evidence 'strongly supports the current choice of hydroxychloroquine as first-line treatment.'" [Read the full story from The Federalist.] The Trump Administration is hosting daily press conferences on coronavirus relief and response. We've found them to be worth watching: you get the news as it happens, straight from the experts. Most TV news stations carry the conferences; you can also watch them online at WhiteHouse.gov/live.
If you tune in, you'll likely notice -- as we personally did -- the difference between reporters who have serious questions and those who want to score cheap political points.
In a time when Americans need fast, accurate reporting on the facts, we're sometimes getting politically-focused questions that don't get us information we need about health, safety, and the most important next steps we must all take.
Consider last week, when President Trump highlighted a medication that might prove to be an effective treatment. The response from some media outlets was outrageous, from accusing President Trump of selling "false hope" to calling the treatment dangerous. (This piece from The Federalist summarizes the issue well.)
In these uncertain times, it's important for all of us to listen to the experts and prioritize health and safety -- not indulge in political attacks. And, in the meantime, we'll continue watching the press conferences from the Trump Administration for ourselves.
We wish we were surprised. It's still very sad to see. "Several liberal groups have launched an aggressive advertising effort attacking the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. At least two entities financed through the left-wing organization Arabella Advisors have launched campaigns politicizing the pandemic, according to the conservative watchdog group Americans for Public Trust." [Read the full story from The Daily Signal.] We can't believe we have to say this: it isn't the time for political attack ads -- for either party!
But according to a report from The Daily Signal, some liberal groups have launched ads against President Trump in an attack on his response to the coronavirus. This is in addition to the story we previously shared about similarly focused ads being run against a Montana Senator.
This is a time for Americans to come together as we face the new, unprecedented challenge of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Why is this such a hard lesson for some on the left to learn?
And (on a lighter note, we think), Joe Biden is back! "Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden plans to begin live-streaming his own briefings on the coronavirus Monday, attempting to keep his Democratic presidential run relevant while the deadly virus sidelines his campaign." [Read the full story from the Washington Times.] Joe Biden had been out of the headlines last week as the nation (rightfully!) focused on the Trump Administration's leadership in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
But starting today, Biden will do a daily update on coronavirus from a remote (i.e. livestreamed, instead of in-studio) set in his home. Since he doesn't hold elected office, it's unclear what effect he will have on the public policy process.
