Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Hello!

I hope everyone’s week is off to a great start. I’m back in DC this week and I have a couple of updates to kick us off for the week.

First, Sunday evening the House Homeland Security Committee released articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. These articles of impeachment are the culmination of a multi-year investigation that found Mayorkas is "chiefly responsible for the chaos and devastation that has unfolded over the past three years." The committee will convene Tuesday to mark up the articles of impeachment.

This week I’ll also be introducing a new piece of legislation that I am excited to share with you all. Keep an eye out in your newspaper or on social media this week for the latest on it!

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office if you have any questions.

Have a great week!

- Scott

Holocaust Remembrance Day

This weekend marked Holocaust Remembrance Day. This solemn day is an important reminder and time to honor the approximately six million Jews whose lives were brutally taken in the Holocaust.

In honoring Holocaust victims we must stay committed to fighting the antisemitism that still persists today. I continue to advocate and vote on legislation that condemns antisemitism where it exists.

Following the vicious attacks on October 7th by Hamas against the Jewish people, I voted in support of a number of resolutions—including H. Res. 798 and H. Res. 771—to stand with the Jewish people and condemn the support of any terrorist organizations on college campuses that make it an unsafe place for Jewish students to learn.

Sent a Letter to the FTC to Keep Liberal Politics out of Mergers & Acquisitions

Last week, I sent a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan alongside over 30 of my colleagues calling out the FTC’s use of ESG criteria in merger enforcement as part of the Biden Administration’s war on American energy.

On October 23, 2023, Ms. Synda Mark, Deputy Assistant Director of the FTC's Office of Policy & Coordination, was quoted as saying, "Just the plain reading of the antitrust laws can take into account social goals like sustainability like racial equity." Ms. Mark went on to state, "All of these other social values, I think, are embedded in not only the history, but the actual meaning of the antitrust statutes that we have."

These statements raise doubts about whether FTC will faithfully enforce antitrust laws when a merger may be in contravention of a social goal.

In our letter, we ask Chair Khan to clarify these statements and maintain the United States' reputation for administrable, predictable, and credible antitrust enforcement.

President Biden Makes Another Misstep on Energy Policy

On Friday, the Biden administration annouced will pause approvals on pending natural gas export terminals. This decision is terrible for American energy independence and only serves to embolden our adversaries, like Russia.

To be clear, these export terminals would make our country less dependent on foreign energy and boost jobs and economic opportunity right here in America.

Unfortunately, this is just the latest in a string of decisions President Biden has made to weaken American energy policy.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Applications

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Applications are open and will remain open until April 15.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar offers an opportunity for rising high school seniors to experience USNA for one week. Participants learn about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation's future leaders.

The Summer STEM Program is a great catalyst to initiate the pursuit of a future in science and engineering. Summer STEM is an opportunity for participants to create, build, and explore in world-class lab facilities, working alongside USNA’s distinguished faculty and Midshipmen.

For more information, visit: Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM.   Click here to see the Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Program in action.

That’s a wrap for this week’s eNewsletter! Follow me on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on my work for the 5th District of Wisconsin.

Sincerely,
