John—I’d like to take a moment to explain in a deeply personal way why this race is so important to me, but before I do, will you chip in $5, or any amount, before our first end-of-month fundraising deadline of the year to help me flip NY-17 at this critical moment in our race?

I say “policy is personal” because, for me and so many of my neighbors in the Lower Hudson Valley, it is.

I’ve seen firsthand the indignities of our inadequate social safety net. Growing up, my mom had to work multiple jobs just to pay the bills and keep the lights on, even while we received housing and food assistance.

I’ve personally witnessed the immorality of this country’s health care system. Even with bad knees, my grandmother worked well into her 70s just to cover the costs of over-priced prescription drugs and medical procedures.

As a gay American, I know what it’s like to have basic freedoms denied to me by Congress, Presidents, and the far-right Supreme Court.

As a millennial, I share the anxieties of my generation and all young people who stand to inherit a planet devastated by climate change because of the failure of Congress to treat it like an urgent crisis.

I’m running to go back to Congress because there are far too few leaders there now who share these experiences. Having lived paycheck to paycheck, I know the frustration of watching as corporations and banks get bailouts while working people struggle to make ends meet.

Congress needs more leaders with skin in the game, which is exactly why I’m running to defeat former fossil fuel lobbyist Mike Lawler. Chip in any amount before our end-of-month deadline to help me flip NY-17 and retake our House majority.

Listen, I was proud to be a key player in the most productive Congress in modern history. With our Democratic majority, we rescued the American economy during the worst of the pandemic, lowered prescription drug costs for seniors like my grandma, passed the infrastructure law to repair our crumbling roads and bridges, and created millions of good-paying jobs.

It was a start, but the truth is, it’s not enough. Between outrageous housing, health care, and child care costs, to Republican efforts to ban abortion, to the gun violence epidemic, to attacks on our democracy—people in the Lower Hudson Valley don’t have time to wait for politicians to come around to the right decisions.

We need leaders ready to act.

Republicans like Mike Lawler have proven themselves hostile to the needs of working Americans. They will ban abortion, raise prescription drug prices, slash Social Security and Medicare, and end our democracy.

We can’t let them succeed.

I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get back to work, but I can’t win without this grassroots team behind me. Chip in $5, or whatever you can afford, ahead of Wednesday’s end-of-month deadline, and together, we can retake our majority and create a better future for every one of us.
