How to Fix Flying: A New Approach to Regulating the Airline Industry
A Happy Hour conversation hosted by the American Economic Liberties Project and Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator
Tuesday, January 30, 6:00 PM | National Press Club, Washington, D.C.
Flying is broken. Shrinking seats, chronic delays and cancellations, route closures cutting off smaller cities, high prices, endless fees, and rising safety concerns as plane doors blow away have all become features of a consolidated airline industry where corporations have run roughshod over passengers and the public interest.
Today air travel is essential to connect with each other, conduct business, and build regional economies. And yet, decades of failed deregulation and deliberate policy choices to prioritize the profits of the airline industry have failed consumers, workers, and entire regions across the country while costing taxpayers billions in bailouts. It’s time for policymakers and regulators to take back the controls and make this industry fair, safe, and effective again.
Join us in D.C. on January 30th from 6PM - 8PM EST [[link removed]] at the National Press Club for drinks and a conversation with William J. McGee and Ganesh Sitaraman, to discuss their new paper on how to regulate air travel in America and address systemic issues with safety and the passenger experience.

We’ll discuss why regulations are needed and outline a comprehensive set of options for policymakers that prioritize quality and accessibility in air travel, without the need for taxpayer bailouts. We invite you to be part of this important and timely conversation and share your insights to help us build a fair and sustainable airline industry.
Warmly,
Nidhi Hegde
