John, it’s a bittersweet day.

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court made its ruling in Roe v. Wade.

For nearly 50 years, this ruling stood the test of countless conservative cases to tear it down.

But after Mitch McConnell blocked President Barack Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland from so much as receiving a vote, he conspired with Trump to stack the Court with three far-right nominees.

Opponents of abortion rights saw it as an open invitation to launch a new wave of legal cases attempting to strike down the law, and in 2022, the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling struck Roe down.

It was devastating, but in the time since, every time abortion rights have appeared on the ballot, they’ve won.

The truth is, whether folks are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, a clear majority agree that we don’t want politicians interfering with our personal health care decisions or reproductive freedom.

So while this is a solemn anniversary, I have hope — because of you.

But some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have aims of introducing a nationwide abortion ban in the Senate if Mitch McConnell is the majority leader — not to mention the Senate’s responsibility for confirming federal judges who will be ruling on future abortion rights cases.
