Dear Friends,
Today, several significant actions were taken by a number of federal departments and agencies, representing the Trump Administration’s whole-of-government approach to Covid-19.
* Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf announced that the United States had reached a mutual agreement with Mexico to restrict non-essential travel across our northern and southern borders
* The United States will expeditiously return aliens who cross between ports of entry or are otherwise not allowed to enter the country, as the facilities in which these aliens would normally be held cannot support quarantine for the time needed to assess potential cases.
* Trade and business travel will continue to operate across our borders, ensuring workers and goods are not impeded.
* Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced today that the office of Federal Student Aid will provide student loan relief to tens of millions of borrowers during the COVID-19 national emergency.
* All borrowers with federally held student loans will automatically have their interest rates set to 0% for a period of at least 60 days. In addition, each of these borrowers will have the option to suspend their payments for at least two months and will allow borrowers to temporarily stop their payments without worrying about accruing interest (STATEMENT ATTACHED).
* The Education Department announced that it would suspend the enforcement of federal standardized testing requirements for K-12 schools.
* At President Trump’s direction, the Treasury Department and the IRS are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15 (GUIDANCE ATTACHED).
* The Treasury Department launched a coronavirus webpage ([link removed]) to continue to inform the American public.
* Secretary Mnuchin continues to work with Members of Congress to craft a Phase 3 package to support healthcare providers, workers, and businesses.
* The Federal Reserve announced that it would extend its asset purchase program into municipal bonds.
* As the largest healthcare system in United States, the Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing to reinforce the nation’s private and state hospitals, if called upon.
* The VA has administered over 1,192 COVID-19 tests nationwide while taking aggressive steps to prevent COVID-19 transmission to our country’s heroes.
* The Department of Defense announced that medical crews are arriving today at the USNS Mercy in preparation to set sail to assist medical professionals and first responders.
