Daniel Lurie, who is running against Mayor Breed in the November election, has stooped to shameless opportunism by launching a personal campaign to support one of Mayor Breed’s ballot measures, Proposition E, while simultaneously attacking her for it.



Why, you ask? Because his Prop E campaign will allow him to exploit a dark money loophole: with no contribution limits on ballot measure campaigns, trust-fund millionaires like Daniel are able to pour massive amounts of cash into promoting their own name and face while criticizing Mayor Breed.



<[link removed]>Let’s be clear, we welcome anyone who truly wants to help pass Prop E, a crucial stepping stone on Mayor Breed’s path to improve public safety. What we don’t welcome is Lurie cynically using this important public safety measure – the same measure he blasted when Mayor Breed launched it last year – to further his own candidacy.



What’s worse is that Lurie’s flip-flop, and his mixed messaging – “support Mayor Breed’s policies but reject Mayor Breed” – has the very real potential to damage Prop E’s chances at the ballot box. Historically, voters have responded to ballot confusion by voting “no,” and we worry Lurie’s dark money will backfire on Prop E.



Daniel Lurie just failed leadership 101. He put his own needs before the needs of the city. Voters want leadership, not political opportunism. Lurie has not offered a single genuine policy idea as a candidate for Mayor; instead, all he’s done is play politics with the public safety of San Franciscans.
