John,

Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy of service and dedication to fighting inequality and injustice. As we recommit to his long-standing mission, today is also a reminder of the work we’ve yet to accomplish.

Last year, we saw the most aggressive attempts by the Republican party to chip away at the voting rights Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought relentlessly for. This year, we face an uphill battle in protecting the Voting Rights Act from Republican attempts to dismantle non-discrimination clauses, impose harsh voter ID laws, and limit vote-by-mail.

Make no mistake: these Republican-led bills are further attempts to disenfranchise Black voters.

As Republicans ramp up their efforts to roll back voting rights, I don’t plan on slowing down my efforts to protect them. I’m proud to have three critical voting rights bills in committee intended to fortify our voting rights.

Today and every day, we honor Martin Luther King Jr. by fighting against inequality, protecting our right to vote, and safeguarding our democracy.

Onward,

Valerie
