John,

Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I want to share some thoughts as we come together to reflect on the legacy of a preacher who embodied the words of Saint Francis: "Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words."

Delaware has a rich, difficult, and complex history regarding racial relations. In 1960, Dr. King visited our state and spoke at Howard High School. He challenged the people of Delaware to be more just, more inclusive, and to take charge of changing our future.

Dr. King reminded us that "change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability." Progress requires consistent, intentional action. We must recognize the power of our actions; even small, kind gestures can make a significant difference in the lives of our fellow human beings.

There are still those in our country who are fighting for basic rights and the privilege to enjoy the American dream. From injustice at the ballot box to a lack of access to health care, the work for justice is far from over. Ensuring our children live in a country free of hate and discrimination is a core principle of the movement that lives on today in no small part because of Dr. King’s historic work.

Dr. King's dream can only be realized when we unite and work in service and the pursuit of justice. In the last few years, it's been my honor to support important measures like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, providing equal pay for equal work, and racial justice in policing. I look forward to continuing the work to advance equality.

As we face the challenges of the present, let us embody Dr. King's legacy of action. We must acknowledge that there is still a long journey ahead before we fully realize his dream.

Thank you,

Chris Coons
