John,

I believe Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the greatest leaders in our country’s history, and as we celebrate him today, it is our duty not just to honor his legacy by sharing quotes, but by furthering the fight for civil rights and equality.

Working together to confront injustice is a moral imperative and the voting rights Dr. King fought for are still under attack today.

Last year, at least 14 states enacted 17 laws restricting the right to vote, and in 2021, we saw the most voter suppression laws in a decade, with 33 laws passed.

It’s no coincidence that Republican-controlled state legislatures are redoubling their efforts to restrict the right to vote after Joe Biden’s election victory in 2020.

We’re witnessing an erosion of the highest ideals of our democracy. But it is also a call to action. A call to stand up and be a part of the continuing history of our country.

We cannot let voting rights be stripped away in an attempt to override the will of the American people. We must honor Dr. King’s powerful legacy by ensuring every American has access to the polls in our safe and free election process. The Senate must pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act , and we must elect a Democratic House majority to do the same, so President Biden can sign these crucial pieces of legislation into law.

Our democracy depends on every American’s ability to vote and make their voice heard.

Congress must pass legislation to ensure every person’s fundamental voting rights and safeguard the principles of Dr. King’s generation. We cannot let these rights — that so many fought for and died for — be eroded. We must ensure that they’re enshrined and ensured for future generations.

I believe that if we come together, we can make the U.S. the most robust democracy in the world, and we can be a light for all nations. But we have to do the work. It is not enough to just look back on Dr. King’s work, we must look at ourselves and consider what we’re doing to advance the ideals of our nation today.

With love and gratitude,
