MEDIA ADVISORY AND PRESS RELEASE

Congresswoman Young Kim and Congressman Al Green Announce the Passage of H.R.540 – The Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act

(Houston, TX) — On Friday, January 12, 2024, Congresswoman Young Kim and Congressman Al Green proudly announced that the House of Representatives passed H.R.540 – the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act – a bipartisan bill introduced by Congresswoman Young Kim with Congressman Al Green as co-lead. The bill H.R.540 would require that the United States take actions to support Taiwan’s admission to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IMF is a major global financial institution that supports economic stability and monetary cooperation among member countries throughout the world. Taiwan’s admission into the IMF would not only further advance Taiwan’s robust economy, but also benefit the IMF to have Taiwan’s participation and contribution as a member country. Equally as important, the passage of this bipartisan bill from the U.S. House of Representatives reinforces Taiwan’s economic and political importance globally.

Congressman Al Green stated, “I am proud to join Congresswoman Young Kim as the co-lead of H.R. 540, the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act. I strongly support Taiwan’s admission into the International Monetary Fund. With one of the strongest economies in the world, Taiwan would provide an invaluable benefit to the IMF and the global economy as a whole. I am proud to offer bipartisan support for this bill, which would strengthen our geopolitical relationship with Taiwan and further advance its economic growth. With this bill, Congress recognizes the importance of Taiwan’s inclusion into one of the most critical financial institutions in the world as a means of expanding global economic progress as well as democratic values.”

“As the 21st largest economy in the world, 10th largest trading partner of the United States, and a proven friend in freedom and global health security, Taiwan deserves a seat at the IMF. We cannot stand idly by as the Chinese Communist Party silences Taiwan in international organizations,” said Rep. Young Kim. “The Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act will solidify Taiwan’s rightful place on the global stage and expand opportunities for collaboration and economic growth by joining the IMF. I am proud this bipartisan bill just passed the House, and I thank my colleagues for joining me to support Taiwan in the IMF. I will keep fighting to get this bill signed into law and will always be a voice in support of our freedom-loving allies and democracy around the globe.”
