    Cancer Detection Decreased During COVID-19

In the January issue of Health Affairs, Uriel Kim of Case Western Reserve University and his team of coauthors examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer detection.

The team of researchers find that during the first year of the pandemic, “there was a drop between expected and actual incidence…across all cancer types.” Across all sites, incidence fell by 8.7 percent during the first year of the pandemic.

When the researchers examined changes in cancer incidence by site, almost all cancer sites experienced a drop in incidence.

Kim and his team note that patients who did present with cancer generally had more advanced disease than in the pre-COVID-19 era.
