On Friday, Governor Josh Green announced the Maui Interim Housing Plan, a $500 million initiative to create a pool of more than 3,000 housing units for at least 18 months to house families displaced by last year's devastating fires on Maui.

This collaborative effort brings together the state of Hawaii, the County of Maui, the Hawaii Community Foundation, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the American Red Cross, with the goal of moving all displaced families from short-term hotels into long-term housing by July 1, 2024, with most households moved by March 1.

Governor Green has been actively working with FEMA to extend their commitment to provide short term housing to affected families as this transition occurs.

"FEMA’s financial assistance has been a critical piece to addressing the immediate housing needs on Maui,” Governor Green said. “In addition to $250 million for hotels and rental assistance to individuals, FEMA is currently leasing approximately 1,500 units to house survivors and is designing multiple group sites to house up to 500 households in Accessory Dwelling Units. The estimated costs for these efforts total an additional $450 million, which greatly enhances our ability to house all those who need it."

The Maui Interim Housing Plan includes assistance for residents returning to undamaged housing, the Host Support Program administered by CNHA, direct leasing, short-term rental transitions to long-term rentals, and new permanent developments.

Currently the American Red Cross is helping to house more than 2,400 families, totaling nearly 6,000 individuals, in more than 30 hotels throughout Maui.

We will continue to keep you updated in the coming weeks and months as Governor Green takes further actions to advance the recovery efforts on Maui.

Thank you for supporting Josh and for being a part of Team Green.

Mahalo,

Team Green
