John,

Today marks a horrific day in our nation’s history. On January 6, 2021, I was ready to stand up to my fellow members of Congress in their attempt to overturn a legitimate election — however, I was not prepared for violent rioters to break into the Capitol.

These terrorists attacked law enforcement officers; unleashed chaos and terror among members, staff, and their families; occupied and ransacked offices; vandalized government property; and succeeded in interfering with our Constitutional duty to count electoral votes.

The attack on the Capitol was an insurrection incited by the then-President, and every single action taken in an attempt to overturn the election was an act of sedition. January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history and as such, we must act decisively in defense of the people and the institutions of our government.

If we do not fiercely protect our democracy at every turn — and in every election — we risk the future of our republic. We cannot allow this anti-democratic behavior and rhetoric to become normal. To do so would betray our sacred oath to the Constitution to protect it against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
