After years of tireless work by our members, Marie Newman just unseated Dan Lipinski in a decisive victory.

John—

Now more than ever, we have to celebrate our victories — and last night was a big one.

Pro-choice champion Marie Newman won her primary against anti-choice Democrat Dan Lipinski in Illinois’ 3rd District by a decisive margin. This wouldn't have been possible without you, John.

Dan Lipinski is an anti-choice crusader. He votes wrong every time on every bill, and he even regularly speaks at the extreme anti-choice March for Life gathering. As if that's not enough, he's voted against marriage equality, a living wage, and even the Affordable Care Act. All in a solid blue district!

Still, people believed he was unbeatable, an entrenched incumbent who benefited from high name recognition because his father held the seat before him for nearly three decades.

But Marie Newman knew she could better represent the progressive values of this district. She stepped up in 2017 to run against Lipinski as a champion for reproductive freedom and NARAL was right there with her, endorsing her early and helping build a powerful coalition, and engaging our millions of members, including you.

NARAL members rallied and phonebanked and knocked doors. And when Marie narrowly lost in 2018, we jumped right back in with her when she stepped up for a rematch against Lipinski this year. We pulled out all the stops — including making more than 20,000 calls to voters in IL-03 thanks to members like you. Along with our amazing allies, we got this champion over the finish line in a massive victory last night.

Together, we did it. Marie’s victory is a victory for all of us, for righteous fights, for strong women, and for believing putting people’s freedom and dignity first is a winning strategy. Join us in thanking Marie for stepping up to fight for reproductive freedom.

Last night is also a victory for doing what's right. When I came to NARAL, I promised you all that we would work together, organize, speak truth to power, and fight for as long as it took to secure reproductive freedom for all. Last night was a clear step towards that goal. And I want to thank you, our members, for making it possible.

We have so much more to do and so much uncertainty ahead. But today, we have even more evidence to show that our organizing matters — whether that’s making phone calls from your home or knocking doors in your community for a reproductive freedom candidate. NARAL will be coming back to members like you with other ways to support reproductive freedom candidates this cycle. So let's celebrate ourselves, each other, and Marie for standing up for what's right.

Thanks for all you do,
