A few days ago I asked for your input. Today I’m answering YOUR questions.

John – With just a few days left in the year, I wanted to take a moment to answer some of the questions I’ve heard on the campaign trail (and in my inbox!).

Is Mike Simpson really that bad?

Mike Simpson has represented this district for a quarter of a century. While he likes to brand himself a moderate Republican, his long voting record proves he is as far right as they come. He recently made a big showing of voting against Jim Jordan for House Speaker only to enthusiastically endorse someone even more right wing – Mike Johnson, the leading insurrectionist in Congress.

Like Johnson, Simpson regularly votes against protecting Social Security, against reproductive freedom, against lowering prescription drug prices, against protecting our veterans, and so much more.

When you run the numbers, Simpson’s MAGA scorecard shows that he votes with Trump and MAGA’s priorities 90% of the time!

A graphic featuring a black and white photo of Mike Simpson, congressman for Idaho’s 2nd district, pointing at the camera. The caption reads “Moderate Mike Simpson (ID-02) votes with Trump 90% of the time. MAGA Scorecard.” The word moderate is in scare quotes. Included is a copy of a flier with Donald Trump pointing at the camera saying “Mike has my complete and total endorsement.” with the caption “Dr. Mike Simpson for Congress.”

Will my contribution actually make a difference in a red state?

Absolutely it will! Look, I won’t deny it. This is a tough race. National parties don’t invest in states like Idaho, and that means candidates like me don’t get any institutional support.

One of the biggest reasons I’m running for Congress is to change that, and to help build the organizing infrastructure and volunteer base that can win future elections – for Congress AND state and local races.

And we have several factors working in our favor.

In 2020 over 1 MILLION eligible voters in Idaho stayed home. That’s a million people who don’t feel like either party is speaking to them right now. Our campaign is giving them a reason to vote.

But first I have to reach them, and thankfully Idaho has one of the least expensive media markets in the country. So your contribution of $25, $100, or even $1,000 goes a LOT further here and reaches way more voters than it does in a state like California.

Is there any hope for a Democrat winning in Idaho?

The last Democrat elected to Congress from Idaho was in 2008, which is not that long ago!

National Democrats may have written Idaho off as a “red state,” but they said the same thing about Georgia and Arizona for years – and the people of those states organized their own victories.

We have to build our own infrastructure to win, and that’s what your contributions support.

But forget about political strategy for a minute.

Idaho is my home. I grew up here. I’m raising my sons here. And I’ve been fighting for our community nearly all of my life.

I’ve talked to Democrats all across the state running for downballot positions that often go uncontested, and they’ve been inspired to run because of the success we had in my last campaign. They believe Idaho deserves better, and so do I.

No matter what happens next November, we are building the organizing infrastructure we need for long-term success in this state.

I’m asking you to join us. Invest in Idaho. Invest in democracy. Let’s build for progress that lasts.

Thanks for all that you do, and for having faith in our campaign.

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
