Dear John,
My name is Lisa Pugh, and I am the water quality Monitoring Program Manager at Save the Boundary Waters. We have an exciting update to share with you, and I’m reaching out to ask for your support in expanding our crucial work before the year is up.
Over the past four years, we have been diligently conducting intensive water testing in the watershed of the Boundary Waters to identify and combat pollution. Our efforts paid off this year, as a popular recreation and wild rice lake situated next to the BWCA, Birch Lake, was finally recognized as impaired (too polluted) for sulfate. This recognition is significant because sources of pollution need to be addressed, and such a listing can make it more difficult for dangerous mining projects to be approved in the future!

I lead our water quality research program all year round. We test in all conditions - from the bitter cold to buggy summer days. No matter the season, we are committed to doing this important research. By rushing a 2X gift, you can actively contribute to preserving Minnesota's wild rice and protecting a vulnerable ecosystem.
Here’s how our science program is positively transforming the future of clean water in the Boundary Waters watershed:
Safeguarding Minnesota's State Grain: wild rice
Sulfate pollution greatly impacts the ecology of lakes and streams, posing a threat to the abundance of wild rice in northeastern Minnesota.
Outstanding program recognition
NMW’s fieldwork monitoring water quality in the Boundary Waters watershed has drawn praise from academics and regulators. One agency has said that it knew of no nonprofit in the Great Lakes region doing water monitoring work equivalent to NMW's in quality and scope.

At Save the Boundary Waters, we firmly believe in the value of scientific findings in our fight for the permanent protection of this precious ecosystem.
Your contribution today will have twice the impact on our science work, enabling us to propel Save the Boundary Waters forward. This is just the beginning and, with your support, we can further expand our water quality program and reinforce our commitment to scientific excellence.
Access to remote monitoring locations
Many of our monitoring locations are remote and pose logistical and physical challenges. With your contribution, we can enhance our coordination efforts to ensure optimal operations in difficult-to-reach areas.
Lab fees and equipment costs
Lab fees for sample analysis add up quickly, and the maintenance and upgrading of sophisticated field equipment are substantial investments. Your generosity will enable us to cover these expenses and ensure accuracy and rigor in our research.
Equipment upgrade
To have our data validated and accepted by regulatory agencies, we require better equipment and increased capacity. Your gift will allow us to enhance our infrastructure and expand our capabilities for more comprehensive scientific research.
Increased capacity
We currently monitor 90 sites stretching from proposed mining locations on Birch Lake to the Wilderness. Generating a robust collection of multi-year water quality data is crucial for permanently safeguarding the Boundary Waters watershed against the risk of toxic mining pollution.
Please rush a 2X gift today to make a tangible difference in preserving the Boundary Waters for future generations. [[link removed]]
