Epidemiological Modeling During Pandemic In Europe
In the December issue of Health Affairs, Mark Jit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and his team of coauthors reflect on epidemiological modeling conducted in Western Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Focusing specifically on Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, Jit and coauthors find that approaches to modeling used can be classified according to the temporal scope of the model’s outputs, the pandemic stage the model’s data are based on, the interventions modeled, and the model form.
They find a few common lessons, determining that most modeling teams used deterministic or stochastic compartmental models, models were used for situational analysis, and age-stratified data on things like hospitalizations and virology were most reliable for calibrating models.
The researchers conclude that data collection, collaboration, policy engagement, and public engagement should be supported during future crises.
