Metro’s 2023 Rail and Streetcar Employees of the Year

Metro is thrilled to celebrate two incredible employees from the Rail Division as Employee of the Year. This is the first year Rail has named a division-level Employee of the Year, and the final vote was so close that two people were selected. We can’t think of two better individuals to represent this inaugural award than Streetcar Electro Mechanic *Peter Kruger* and Link Rail Supervisor *Abdi Ibrahim*!

Construction to begin on 235-unit affordable housing project at King County Metro Northgate site
[ [link removed] ]

Construction will soon begin on 235 affordable housing units at King County Metro’s property [ [link removed] ] just east of Northgate Station, the region’s premier transit hub connecting the community with buses and Link light rail.

King County Executive Dow Constantine announced today the start of construction on a 235-unit affordable housing project at King County Metro’s Northgate property after financing and permits are finalized this month. The housing project is part of King County’s ongoing and successful transit-oriented development program. At Northgate Station [ [link removed] ], residents can easily access Sound Transit Link light rail 1 Line service and 21 local and regional bus routes operated by King County Metro, Community Transit, and Sound Transit.

A partnership between BRIDGE Housing Corporation, Community Roots Housing construct the six-story building on one acre of the property, which is under a development agreement and 75-year ground lease with BRIDGE Housing. King County’s Department of Community and Human Services contributed $30 million in county affordable housing funding. Construction is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2025 and Community Roots Housing will operate the facility when it opens.

Join us: Be part of the new Metro Fares Cabinet

We want to make sure transit fares are equitable and easy to use. That’s why we’re looking for community members like you to join our Fares Cabinet. As a Cabinet member, you’ll meet with us regularly throughout 2024 to share your ideas and suggestions on transit fare policies and projects.

*Why is the Fares Cabinet important?*

The Fares Cabinet is important because it represents people who haven’t always had a say in decisions about transit and fare policies. This is your chance to make a difference and ensure your voice is heard!

*Who should apply?*

We encourage you to apply to be part of the Cabinet if you:

* Live, work, or travel in King County.
* Currently use public transportation (such as buses, Link light rail, Water Taxi, or Metro Flex) or are interested in using it.
* Are eligible for or currently use a reduced fare program.
* Believe in equity and social justice, especially when it comes to transportation and access to opportunities.
* Are part of a diverse community in King County and understand the challenges faced by people who are often excluded or treated unfairly.

As a thank you for your time, cabinet members will be compensated at the rate of *$75 per hour* for attending meetings and other events.

*Don’t miss this chance to make a difference!*

The deadline to apply is* December 31.* Learn more and apply online at our King County Metro fare policy webpage [ [link removed] ].

Stuffing a bus with holiday cheer!

When the holidays roll around, Metro employees always step up through the Toys for Tots program to ensure area children in need find a little something under the tree.

Picture of 5 metro employees with a Toys for Tots box and next to a Metro bus

This year was no different: We collected thousands of toys, books and games to make the holidays a bit brighter for local kids. Last week, we stuffed a bus with the donations from our holiday charity program and drove them in for distribution through our partner, the Salvation Army.

We’re proud to partner with Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army this holiday season, and we’re proud of our employees for their support of local families in need at the holidays!
