John, I’ll be straightforward with you:

This was not the year we had hoped for when it came to Congressional action to address the many big challenges our country still faces.

The threadbare GOP majority in the House took fifteen votes to elect a Speaker in January. When they ousted him nine months later, that chamber of Congress shut down for an entire month.

In the meantime, they have pursued divisive political agendas that do nothing to address real and urgent problems. And Donald Trump’s outrageous campaign rhetoric and continued attacks on our democratic values continue to poison the work of building consensus and finding common ground.

We have a maternal mortality crisis made worse by GOP opposition to Medicaid expansion and attempts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.

We have a gender pay gap that is even more unequal for women of color while we continue to fight for the Equal Rights Amendment.

We have a reproductive freedom crisis the likes of which this country hasn’t seen since before Roe v. Wade, with many Congressional Republicans advocating for a national abortion ban.

We have a crisis of GOP-dominated state legislatures and governors putting laws into effect targeting LGBTQ+ people, banning books, and erasing history.

And if we don’t protect our two-seat Democratic Senate majority, many of these draconian measures could come to the Senate floor with a real chance of passing.

We desperately need to pass federal legislation to protect our rights and to fight back against power grabs by GOP-dominated states and the far-right Supreme Court majority.

But that’s only possible if we defend the Senate and the White House, and retake control of the House of Representatives next November.
