Mental Health Outcomes Of Older Adults in Mexico

In their DataWatch article in the December issue of Health Affairs, Cesar Gonzalez-Gonzalez of Universidad de Colima and his team of coauthors examine the association between COVID-19 and four mental health outcomes among older adults in Mexico.

While the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults did not significantly increase during the pandemic, Gonzalez-Gonzalez and coauthors find that among the older adults sampled, there was an elevated risk for negative health outcomes for those experiencing either COVID-19 infection or major COVID-19-related adverse events.

This effect was greater for those who had a major COVID-19-related adverse event compared with those who had not experienced a major adverse event. 

Gonzalez-Gonzalez and coauthors also determine that women and less-educated people were at greatest risk for depression and loneliness associated with COVID-19.
