Dear John,

The holiday season offers a moment to reflect on a year that has been a mix of hopeful highlights and daunting challenges.

We witnessed the hottest year on record, with heatwaves, wildfires, and droughts highlighting the urgency of our fight for climate protection. Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas have filled us with deep concern and sorrow, all amidst a cost-of-living crisis still affecting many Europeans.

But there were also many fights in which we were able to make real progress:

On the political level, the Nature Restoration Law, which was passed in the European Parliament despite the opposition from the EPP and the far-right showed that thanks to the leadership of the Greens and the alliance with progressives and democrats across Europe, the front of conservatives and far-right forces that want to bring Europe backwards, can be defeated.

Greens in government fought hard for climate policies and human rights. And our member parties in Poland and Spain played key roles in progressive coalitions, counteracting the far-right's surge and upholding democratic values.

We're also thrilled to have expanded our Green family, warmly welcoming PAN and Livre from Portugal, Vesna from Slovenia, and Dialogue from Hungary. This growth, alongside our representation in 7 European governments, underscores the growing need and influence of Green solutions.

The many powerful events that brought together the Green family in Europe are a great symbol for our strength and unity. Be it in Warsaw for the European Ideas Lab, in Madrid for the Green Social Summit or in Vienna for our Extraordinary Congress: Your participation and support made them wonderful occasions that motivated us every time again!

2023 was also the year where we started setting up our common campaign for the European election next June together with our member parties. Collaborating with NGOs, civil society organizations, trade unions, and other stakeholders, we've been crafting a manifesto that truly embodies Green ideals and solutions.

Despite all these achievements, we are aware that the current times don’t always give much reason for hope. Anger, sadness, or anxiety are natural responses to the climate crisis, wars, and economic uncertainties.

Understanding this, we embrace our role in shaping a better future for all Europeans. A strong and influential Green voice is now more important than ever.

The European Parliament election takes place in June 2024, and that’s why we will work hard – together with you – for an exceptional election campaign next year, to secure a substantial Green representation across the European Union. This is our path to a sustainable and just future.

John, as we are getting ready for a critical election year, your involvement is crucial. If you haven't already, we encourage you to become a volunteer. Let's make 2024 a year of impactful Green change together!
