Dear John,
We stand on the shoulders of giants who have fought to defend the Boundary Waters, and today we’re continuing the century-long legacy to protect this embattled Wilderness. We've made significant progress, but the work is not done.
Ten years ago, Save the Boundary Waters was born out of the urgent need to defend Canoe Country from the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining. Today, I'm writing to you with an update on our strategy and to ask for your continued philanthropic support in our fight to protect this Wilderness. Thanks to a generous $175,000 matching gift, your donation will be doubled to have twice the impact!

When Antofagasta, a foreign mining conglomerate, set its sights on Ely, Minnesota, to build Minnesota’s first sulfide-ore copper mine, we knew we had to do something. Many deemed our dream of achieving a federal ban on copper mining in this watershed impossible. However, Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, a steadfast advocate for local Wilderness for decades, embraced our cause and dared to dream big. Thus, Save the Boundary Waters was born.
Since then, our movement has grown into a nationally recognized force for public lands protection:
*
We
have
built
a
strong
coalition
and
become
the
voice
of
the
Boundary
Waters
in
Washington,
D.C.,
St.
Paul,
and
beyond.
In
fact,
we
are
the
only
organization
working
at
both
the
federal
and
state
levels
to
permanently
safeguard
this
cherished
Wilderness.

*
Through
tenacious
persistence,
we
have
attended
over
1,000
meetings
in
Washington,
D.C.,
across
three
different
federal
administrations.

*
This
year,
we
celebrated
the
recent
20-year
ban
on
copper
mining
in
a
portion
of
Superior
National
Forest.
However, we know the Boundary Waters is a forever Wilderness that demands continuous protection. We still have work to do.

In the coming year, we will focus on our cutting-edge science program and on defending federal protections and advocating for state action to safeguard state lands in the Boundary Waters watershed. Your voice matters as we work to bring attention to the importance of this quiet place.
