Dear City Limits Friends,

We are excited to share highlights from the fourth quarter of 2023 with you, our valued readers. We look forward to bringing you more impactful, meaningful local journalism in the new year. In the meantime, please consider supporting our nonprofit, independent journalism with a year-end donation. Thank you for your support.

Last month, City Limits celebrated its 47th anniversary with a fundraiser gala, marking nearly half a century of providing in-depth reporting on New York City policy. See highlights and photos from the celebration here ([link removed]) .
Chris Janaro will join City Limits in January through the Newmark Veterans in Journalism Fellowship Program ([link removed]) —a partnership between Military Veterans in Journalism (MVJ), the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY—which places fellows in nonprofit newsrooms for nine months as they start their journalism careers. Janaro is a recent CUNY Newmark graduate and a Navy vet. He’ll cover land use, zoning and development, and will work on stories exploring how housing and homelessness policies impact New York’s veteran communities.

NYCHA reporter Tatyana Turner recently appeared on WNYC’s Notes from America on Dec. 17 to discuss her public housing coverage ([link removed]) .

Climate reporter Mariana Simões will be a guest on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer show on Tuesday, Dec. 19 to discuss her investigation into the lawsuit challenging New York’s gas ban ([link removed]) .
Noteworthy initiatives from the past quarter include the launch of our revamped NYC shelter count, producing an informative video for tenants voting on NYCHA’s future, and hosting a panel discussion dissecting funding plans for the city’s public housing system.
• NYC Shelter Count ([link removed]) : Since the start of 2022, City Limits has been trying to answer a seemingly simple question: How many people are staying in NYC’s homeless shelters? But it's complicated. Our revamped NYC Shelter Count ([link removed]) aims to capture the true scale of the crisis.
• Voting on NYCHA’s Future ([link removed]) : View this City Limits video that delves into the complexities of a vote that will impact Nostrand Houses tenants in the near term, and explores the choices thousands of additional public housing tenants will have to make in the coming years.
• How Should NYCHA Fund Repairs? A City Limits Conversation ([link removed]) : Last month, City Limits hosted a panel conversation about the plans being pitched to drum up funding for the city’s public housing system. What is RAD/PACT and the new Preservation Trust, how do they differ from traditional Section 9, and what does each option mean for tenants? Watch it here ([link removed]) .
CLARIFY News high school student reporters ([link removed]) are wrapping up their Fall assignment, an investigation of Mayor Eric Adams’ progress on housing and homelessness. Working in teams, student reporters are focused on comparing progress against three pillars of his housing campaign promises: “Save NYCHA,” “Create and Preserve Affordable Housing,” and “Reimagine Our City.” In addition to receiving training in the fundamentals of investigative reporting, this CLARIFY News cohort had an opportunity to interview and learn from visiting speakers including Councilwoman Alexa Aviles; photojournalist Adi Talmar; CSS Housing Policy Analyst, Samuel Stein; Executive Director at Citizens Housing and Planning Council, Howard Slatkin; City Limits NYCHA reporter, Tatyana Turner; and City Limits editor, Jeanmarie Evelly. Look out for their article to be published early in the new year.

We are planning for a robust year of journalism in 2024, made possible by the generous support of funders including The Pinkerton Foundation who recently announced a renewed partnership with us that we are so grateful for. Plans for 2024 include more than doubling the number of student reporters participating in the CLARIFY News ([link removed]) six-week summer intensive, in partnership with SYEP and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

You can help support high school students who are interested in pursuing journalism by contributing to The CLARIFY News Fellowship program. This program matches individual support with talented high school students to provide them with skills and experience that will support their successful entry into higher education or the workforce. Each $1,000 donation to the fund supports one student’s participation in the CLARIFY News student reporter internship.

Support City Limits with a year-end gift and your donation will be doubled by the national fundraising program NEWSMATCH

Our editorial staff—Jeanmarie, Emma, Tatyana, Mariana, Daniel and Adi — cover NYC’s underreported stories with integrity and tenacity. Their work would not be possible without the support of members and readers like you.

We have 13 days left until the December 31st NewsMatch deadline, and we need your help to reach our year end fundraising goals. Your tax-deductible donation will be doubled by NewsMatch, up to $1,000. We’re so close, and your donation could be the one that helps us reach our goal. If you believe in the work we’re doing, will you give today to double the impact of your donation?
