FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 118, Issue #44 Dear Friends/Amigos, Last week was our last week in Washington, D.C. for 2023! My staff and I ended off on a very high note fighting for District 27 in Congress. The Dignity Act continues to make waves in Congress and the media, while I introduced several pieces of legislation to make the lives of my constituents better. Check out some of those wins below! As always, feel free to share your thoughts with me by visiting my website at Salazar.House.Gov or by calling my office at (202) 225-3931. Sincerely/Atentamente, María Elvira Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) MY BILL TO REDUCE PASSPORT WAIT TIMES JUST PASSED THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE! Is the image above a familiar sight? You take off a day from work in hope that you can get your family's passports renewed in time for a vacation, and you don't hear back from the agency for weeks. To respond quickly to the needs of my constituents, I introduced a bill with my colleague, Congressman Darrell Issa, to completely overhaul the passport processing system so wait times can finally go down. The very good news is that our bill passed unanimously through the House Foreign Affairs Committee, so we're working hard to bring it to the full House of Representatives for a vote. In the meantime, read more about my bill here. JAVIER MILEI IS NOW PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA. ALL HE NEEDS TO FIX THE COUNTRY NOW IS TIME! President Javier Milei of Argentina won his historic election on a message of limited government, private property rights, and rule of law. At his inauguration, Milei assured his people that decades of damage wrought by the Kirchners on their economy was finally catching up to them. In response, he swiftly enacted reforms to bring back his economy from the brink of collapse, but they need time to go into effect. Argentina has a looming deadline for a massive $900 million payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) only 11 days after Milei took office. Milei is a brilliant economist, but not a miracle worker. As Chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, I sent a letter to the Treasury and the IMF urging them to negotiate a fair deal with his government to pay off their outstanding loans. President Milei will be a great partner to the United States. He just needs time to unleash Argentina's potential. To read more about the letters I sent, click here. I INTRODUCED A BILL REAFFIRMING OUR COMMITMENT TO LIBERTY IN VENEZUELA! The dictator Nicolás Maduro and his lackeys are working day in and day out to make sure their grip on power is never threatened by the legitimate opposition of Venezuela. Over the last few months, Maduro has broken his promises to the United States to hold free and fair elections in his home country by engaging in a series of Nicolás Maduro's tyranny cannot stand, so I have introduced the VERDAD Reauthorization Act to renew the sanctions against regime officials and humanitarian aid for the vulnerable who suffer under them provided under the VERDAD Act that was passed in 2019. Now more than ever, America must show that we stand with the Venezuelan people and their fight against Socialism of the 21st Century. My bill is an excellent first step to do just that.
