COVID-19 Disruptions To Care in Latin America

In the December issue of Health Affairs, Cristian Herrera of the World Bank and his team of coauthors examine how eight Latin American countries responded to routine health service disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through a series of interviews with policy makers and health care managers from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, the researchers identify themes related to impacts on the provision of routine health services, barriers to maintaining routine health services, and innovative strategies to sustain and recover services.

Herrera and coauthors find that primary health care was one of the most disrupted types of health services; preexisting structural deficiencies in health care systems were revealed during the pandemic.

They conclude that in the short term, future policies should aim to recover postponed services, and medium- and long-term efforts should aim toward the development of more-resilient health care systems.
