Friday, December 8, 2023 | The Latest Research, Commentary, and News from Health Affairs

    Dear John,

As we bring 2023 to a close, we are revisiting a few of our favorite episodes of A Health Podyssey.

This week, we highlighted an episode from January 2022 featuring Matthew Trombley of Abt Associates discussing how to support the creation of accountable care organizations in less populated areas.

    Addressing Global Vaccine Inequities

In the December issue of Health Affairs, Peter Hotez writes a Commentary piece on ways to address global vaccine inequities.

Hotez argues that there are two components to disparities in vaccine access: inequities in vaccine availability and vaccine refusal or hesitancy.

To address these factors, Hotez recommends developing the capacity for vaccine production in low- and middle-income countries.

He notes that in addition to financial support for infrastructure and human capital, multinational summits like the United Nations (UN) need to commit to guaranteed purchase and advance market commitments.

Hotez remarks that vaccine hesitancy is an under-acknowledged aspect of global vaccine inequity, and that in response to the highly political nature of antivaccine and antiscience movements, the health sector needs to work in collaboration with organizations like NATO or UN agencies.

For more insight into this piece, check out a video abstract featuring author Peter Hotez.

We’re pleased to announce the continuation of our Forefront Series “Medicare and Medicaid Integration.”

This series features policy analysis, proposals, and commentary that we hope will elevate the issues for our audience and inform policies on the state and federal levels to advance integrated care for those dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.

Begun in early 2022, the series has already featured over two dozen articles by various authors discussing the advancement of integrated care for dual-eligible individuals, the CAPABLE Program, proposals for Medicaid managed care rules, the improvement of care for dually eligible individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and many related topics.

Thanks to ongoing support from Arnold Ventures, we are able to reissue our call for submissions for this series. We will accept submissions until October 31, 2024.
