John, Donald Trump just vowed in an exclusive Sean Hannity Fox News town hall that he would be a dictator on “day one.”

Hannity: “Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody.”

Trump: “Except for day one…I love this guy. He says, ‘you’re not gonna be a dictator, are you?’ I said, no, no, no — other than day one…After that, I’m not a dictator.”

Let me tell you this, John: If we allow Trump to make it to day one, it will already be too late.

It’s been nearly four years since I stood in the well of the Senate as the lead impeachment manager of Trump’s Senate trial and told the senators:

Trump has compromised our elections, and he will do so again. You will not change him. You cannot constrain him. He is who he is. Truth matters little to him. What’s right matters even less, and decency matters not at all.

You can’t trust this president to do the right thing. Not for one minute, not for one election, not for the sake of our country. You just can’t. He will not change and you know it.

I wish the past few years had proved different, but every word I said on the Senate floor has been proven right.

Since that day, our democracy has suffered a deadly insurrection at the Capitol and witnessed the first-ever indictments of an American president.

This problem isn’t going away. It isn’t going to resolve itself. And our democracy is not guaranteed.
