There are recent developments that will affect children's right to daily, 20 minutes consecutive, unstructured recess. A proposal in the Florida Legislature would eliminate the existing requirements.

Due to your advocacy, the Senate filed an amendment to remove the harmful recess language. If it passes, the amendment will keep the right to recess intact! We are so thankful to Senator Simon for listening to our concerns and making the necessary changes!

Click here to contact the Fiscal Policy Committee. Tell them to VOTE YES for the amendment and protect children's right to recess.

Read the update below and take action for students. Visit the Advocacy Dashboard to find other ways you can support public schools. We make it easy to identify and contact your legislators via email and/or social media. Together, we can advocate for policies that invest in children and support their future.

Protect children's right to recess

A bill in the Florida Legislature would remove children's right to daily recess despite pushback from parents, educators, and health care experts. This week, an amendment was filed by Sen. Simon that would leave the existing recess law alone.

Thank Sen. Simon for his amendment and urge the Fiscal Policy Committee members to save recess by voting yes for the amendment on December 12th.

Demand transparency for your tax dollars

A recent article in the Tampa Bay TImes titled "Florida school vouchers can pay for TVs, kayaks and theme parks. Is that OK?" outlined the many ways tax payer dollars can be used in the form of school vouchers by families who send their child to private school or who homeschool. "Theme park passes, 55-inch TVs, and stand-up paddleboards are among the approved items that recipients can buy to use at home. The purchases can be made by parents who home-school their children or send them to private schools, if any voucher money remains after paying tuition and fees."

There is little to no oversight on how our tax dollars are being spent on voucher programs which drain funding from our public schools. Tell Florida lawmakers that you demand transparency for our tax dollars.
