๐Ÿค I had the pleasure of joining two of our fabulous PPCs, Harpreet Uppal for Huddersfield, and Paul Davies for Colne Valley, to look at some of the fantastic work being done Huddersfield across the health and care spectrum.ย

๐Ÿ• First we visited Platform One, a fantastic mental health support charity, working across a range of services to provide crisis support and ongoing counselling to those in need. I particularly loved their โ€œListening Dogโ€ a fantastic tool to help support young victims of abuse.ย

๐Ÿ  I then went to Huddersfield University to see some of the fantastic research work theyโ€™re doing on building homes fit for care, including their high tech Smart House, which is used to test how we can adapt homes and building regulations to ensure people can stay at home to receive care for longer.ย

๐Ÿ—๏ธ We then visited the construction site of the Universityโ€™s new National Health Innovation Campus, a cutting edge facility that will do pioneering health research, as well as bringing vital health and care services into the town centre for the local community.ย

๐ŸŒนI couldnโ€™t leave without grabbing a picture with one of Huddersfieldโ€™s favourite sons! With his pioneering pursuit of the โ€œwhite heat of technologyโ€ he would be immensely proud of the work going on in his home town.

I was so proud of my colleague and good friend Diana Johnson MP, whoโ€™s took on the Government - AND WON (by four votes) - over their reluctance to give compensation to the victims of contaminated blood.

This is a scandal thatโ€™s gone on for far too long.

Hopefully this vote will now trigger the interim payments the inquiry chair has called for

Well done to the children of Stanley Grove Primary Academy for their brilliant colourful lanterns which they paraded through the streets of Longsight before singing Christmas songs and counting down to light the Christmas Tree on Stockport Road. ๐ŸŽ„

A BIG thank you to Councillors Lutfur Rahman, Abid Chohan and Suzanne Richards for inviting me, and introducing me to this great event!

Andrew in the the media

Small businesses are the beating heart of our economy, breathing life into our high streets and delivering services that make our lives easier.

What truly makes small businesses great is the people behind them, putting their all into serving local people, with the money they make going back into the local economy.

Honest, hard-working people, who make our community a brighter place.

Over the last few weeks, Iโ€™ve had the pleasure of meeting local small business from across my constituency through my annual Local Business Awards.

From cafes, hair and beauty salons, pubs, restaurants, tradespeople, we are blessed with some fantastic small businesses here in Tameside.

Particularly during the run up to Christmas, I would urge everyone to think about where they shop and if you can, shop local.

When you do, youโ€™re not just generating revenue, you are supporting hard working families who will give back to our local community, not take from it.

Every small business has their own story to tell, their own unique set of challenges, and their own vision for the future.

But what they all have in common is a determination to succeed.

Sadly, too many small businesses in Tameside and across the country are being badly let down by this government, and not given the respect their sheer economic weight deserves.

Time after time, the ambition, ingenuity, and determination shown by our small businesses is simply not being matched by a government who could really learn a thing or two from them.

We canโ€™t afford 13 more years of the Conservatives, which is why Iโ€™m proud that my friend and fellow Tameside MP Jonny Reynolds, Labourโ€™s Shadow Business Secretary, has announced Labourโ€™s plan for Small Businesses.

Itโ€™s a plan that will respect the value of small businesses, creating the certainty and long-term environment so many are crying out for.

Labour will legislate to tackle late payments, with tough new laws to make sure small businesses get paid on time.

We will scrap business rates, for a fairer system to reduce the burden on high street premises and not stand in the way of firms who want to expand.

High streets will be revitalised, by tackling anti-social behaviour through introducing new town centre police patrols.

Itโ€™s a plan that will deliver a fundamental reset for small businesses in our community, replacing Conservative chaos with a decade of national renewal under Labour.
