Right now, there’s no federal law guaranteeing workers paid sick days. So while medical experts urge workers across the country to stay home if they’re sick, too many people – especially those in the service industry – simply can’t if they want to keep paying the bills and putting food on the table. That means there’s millions of people who are forcing themselves to go to work sick, or who can’t take care of their sick family members or kids whose schools are closed, because they can’t afford to lose a paycheck. Congress should have passed guaranteed paid sick leave a long time ago, but now it’s all the more urgent. While Democrats have introduced legislation to do this, Senate Republicans just turned their backs on workers and blocked the bill yesterday.
Together, we’ll get through this. -Charles Charles Chamberlain, ChairDemocracy for America ![]() |
