We’ve seen at least 38 deadly mass shootings in the United States this year. That is more than any year since at least 2006. Earlier today, there was a tragic act of gun violence in Las Vegas, Nevada — the same city as a horrific event in 2017, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

We cannot allow yet another community to experience the devastation of gun violence. That is why Congress must pass my Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act without delay to help get deadly weapons off the streets and prevent these tragedies.

It’s past time to draw a line between the firearms Americans use for hunting, sporting, and self-defense — and deadly weapons of war. We can protect the Second Amendment for responsible gun owners while regulating gas-operated firearms, high-capacity ammunition magazines, and conversion devices like bump stocks.

The GOSAFE Act will regulate firearms based on the lethality of their internal mechanisms. No one will be able to buy a new gas-operated semi-automatic rifle if its fixed magazine holds more than 10 cartridges. This would slow shooters’ rate of fire and force them to reload sooner, providing first responders more time to disarm them and tend to victims.

In short, this legislation will curb mass shootings and save lives.

We can and must protect responsible gun ownership while keeping deadly weapons out of the hands of those who could turn them against our communities.

We must take action as we see these deadly acts of gun violence rise. Last year, we made history by taking the first congressional action on gun safety reform in decades. We can see the GOSAFE Act become law, too, if we come together behind our shared values.
