On December 13th, the PIF Research Working Group will hear a presentation by Dr. Sung W. Choi on his recent paper about the public charge chilling effect on WIC. Published in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, the study documents the steady decline of participation in the WIC program among pregnant immigrants in 2019 when the Trump public charge rule was announced and then again when it was published. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)’s Policies for Action initiative has issued a call for proposals to support research that advances the inclusion of immigrant children and families. Nonprofits are eligible, and interested PIF partners should consider joining the informational webinar on Dec. 15, 12-1:30pm ET.

As part of our ongoing series of partner highlights, today PIF wants to lift up our partners at the Immigration Research Initiative (IRI). IRI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank focused on issues of economic, social, and cultural inclusion of immigrants in the United States. David Dyssegaard Kallick, IRI’s executive director, co-chairs PIF’s Research Working Group. His leadership has been integral to creating the welcoming, supportive, and collegial culture we are so proud of. IRI regularly turns out research that helps PIF and other advocacy organizations fine tune their work. In 2023, for example, IRI’s research on Immigrants in the U.S. Economy provided much-needed data to support advocacy efforts across a spectrum of policy areas.

David reflected recently on IRI’s relationship with PIF, saying, "It has been moving and rewarding to be part of such a rich community of research colleagues who can compare notes and keep each other up to speed on the most current studies. And our work as researchers feels meaningful when it is in tight connection with the broad and deep and varied set of advocacy and organizing groups that are part of the PIF coalition, committed to improving conditions for immigrants in this country and to redefining who we are as a country in the process."
