Hey Swing Left,
Last week, a man with an assault rifle opened fire on a festival in Gilroy, California, just an hour south of where my family and I live.
Over the weekend, two more gunmen killed innocent people in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas.
Three mass shootings in one week. Thirty-four people killed. Dozens injured.
The gun crisis is getting worse—according to Everytown for Gun Safety, 100 people are killed every day by guns in America. And after this weekend, the connection between mass shootings and Donald Trump fanning the flames of white nationalism is undeniable.
Thoughts and prayers won’t end this crisis; policy will. But that’s not going to happen until we end Republican control of the Senate.
The Democrat-led House passed two gun control bills in 2019 that would put necessary checks on gun ownership by strengthening background checks for all gun sales. But Mitch McConnell and his Republican senators ignored both bills. They refuse to pass gun control laws. And since that House vote, there have been more than 200 mass shootings in America, according to research from the Gun Violence Archive.
Here's a bit of good news: Next year we have the chance to elect a Senate that puts our lives above NRA endorsements. There are already eight Republicans heading towards really tough elections. Donate to our Senate Fund today, and 100% of your donation will go directly to the Democratic candidates running in these winnable races.
Winning back the House was the first step to passing gun control legislation. But we can’t truly move forward without the Senate (and neither can a Democratic president).
So let's flip the Senate. Democrats only need four more seats in the Senate to retake the majority and we’ve set our sights on the eight most winnable races. Donating early money to the eventual nominees is one of the best things you can do right now to help them win—we’ll hold onto your donation and give it to the winners of these Democratic primaries.
Donate to the Senate Fund today—every dollar will go to the eight Senate nominees right when they need it most.
Enough is enough.
