John --

Our friends at With Honor, a great group working to elect more veterans to Congress, are hosting Congressman Adam Kinzinger this Thursday afternoon for a virtual Q&A. And they'll be giving away free copies of his new book Renegade to 100 attendees (your choice of hardcover or audio book).

This is a great chance to win a free copy of Congressman Kinzinger's New York Times bestselling book, and hear him speak about pressing issues during the moderated Q&A.

VOTING ACCESS

NPR: A Court Ruling Poses A New Threat To The Voting Rights Act's Protections

Last week, a federal appeals court ruled that private individuals and groups, like the ACLU or NAACP, can't sue under a key section of the Voting Rights Act. It's a decision that could reshape the political landscape, at a time when states across the country are already fighting over district lines.

KJZZ: Fontes says the lawsuit over drop box voting is an effort to restrict voting rights

A lawsuit has been filed against Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes over the use of drop boxes for voting. The Arizona Free Enterprise Club, which advocates for additional restrictions on voting, and a voter filed the suit. In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs said using the drop boxes “is an illegal method of voting under Arizona law.” On PBS’s “Arizona Horizon,” Secretary Fontes said this is an effort to restrict voting rights.

AMERICAN DEMOCRACY

Georgia Public Radio: Voting groups fear court ruling on Arkansas maps hurts chances to challenge election laws

A federal appeals court ruling last week is the latest sign in a shifting national landscape limiting the ability of minority voters to challenge voting laws on claims of racial discrimination. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of a federal district judge who dismissed a lawsuit filed by organizations representing Black voters who alleged that redrawn Arkansas state legislative maps dilute their voting power.

The Fulcrum: The Voter Choice Act reintroduced in the Senate

On November 16 following Election Day, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Angus King (I-Maine) reintroduced the Voter Choice Act to support adoption of a ranked choice voting (RCV) model for elections, also known as an “instant runoff.” Senator Angus King of Maine stated that, “In the face of threats that undercut the fundamental right to vote for millions of Americans, we must act to protect our democracy,” said King. “The Voter Choice Act would help communities advance the vast majority of voters’ priorities by instituting ranked choice voting.”
