Republicans don’t want to waste this crisis. With a pandemic spooking stock markets and threatening the lives of seniors and people with disabilities, Donald Trump is seeking to exploit the coronavirus crisis to achieve a long-term right-wing goal: Destroying our Social Security system.

During a lunch with Republican lawmakers yesterday, Trump proposed reducing FICA contributions―which provide Social Security with dedicated funding―to zero. And what’s worse, Fox News reports that he would like to make that cut permanent.¹

When Social Security was first enacted, FDR said:

“We put those payroll contributions there so as to give the contributors a legal, moral, and political right to collect their pensions and their unemployment benefits. With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my social security program.”

That right is what Donald Trump and his allies like Mitch McConnell want to destroy. Social Security has been protected from cuts over its 84 years precisely because the American people have been so invested in it.

The coronavirus is a serious threat to our lives and our economy. But destroying our Social Security system isn’t the answer. And we need a comprehensive public health response that puts American security ahead of Wall Street’s greed.
