Dear Friend,
Over the last year, I visited more than fifty Colorado counties, listening to people’s concerns, working together to solve problems, and supporting each other. As the year comes to a close, I am thankful to each of you for being a part of our community here in Colorado, where we prize problem solving and the politics of hope over demonizing others and the politics of fear.
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, our opportunities for gratitude may feel elusive. I recognize that the state of our world is challenging and uncertain, with rising attacks on the rule of law and our democratic institutions, a changing climate, the increasing spread of hate crimes, the scourge of gun violence, and much more to be worried about.
Even during these times, however, I remain hopeful. For me, an exchange in the Lord of the Rings comes to mind:
"I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “ So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
On a similar theme, my Jewish faith teaches that we are each not commanded to complete the work of repairing our world, but we are not free to desist from doing our part to heal it. As your Attorney General, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with so many engaged Coloradans who find hope in each other, advancing the rule of law, protecting our democracy, and promoting justice for all.
My family and I wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving.
Phil
