Over a year ago, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Nancy Pelosi, was brutally attacked by David DePape in the Pelosi’s San Francisco home.

DePape’s trial was last week. While both DePape and Paul Pelosi testified, DePape made news because he detailed his horrifying path from developing an obsession with online conspiracy theories to his violent attack on Pelosi.

The jury convicted DePape. But that's not where this story ends, John.

Last year’s attack on Paul Pelosi isn’t an isolated incident. Increasingly, Republicans and right-wing media are showing a disturbing willingness to incite violence for political gain.

We'll explain more in a moment, but if you're ready to support honest journalism that won't whitewash the GOP's extremism, can you chip in $5 or anything you can afford today? [[link removed]]

Make no mistake: Incitement to violence has become a staple tactic of today's Republican Party.

Moreover, it's become increasingly clear that many Americans have developed a dangerously high tolerance for living with this reality.

But this isn't surprising, John. Far-right misinformation machines like Donald Trump and his allies in right-wing media like Fox News and OAN have been slowly desensitizing viewers to extreme, dehumanizing rhetoric about political opponents for years.

The use of violence has been key to the MAGA movement's long-term endgame of seizing power and destroying our democracy.

In the last week alone, after Trump allies leaked plans for what is nothing short of the complete dismantling of our democracy , Trump doubled down on this rhetoric in a Veterans Day speech, referring to his political opponents as "vermin" and promising to "root them out" — echoing the same language used by European fascists.

As the 2024 election approaches, all indications are that Trump isn't going to ratchet this language down. But we won't be sitting on the sidelines.

Our talented team of journalists at COURIER are working hard day in and day out to provide the accessible, intentional reporting and journalism that Americans deserve. Can you pitch in $5 or anything that makes sense for you today to support our extraordinary slate of journalists? [[link removed]]
