Dear  john,

I hope that you and your family are well as we enter the holiday season. The Capitol Christmas tree arrived in Washington this week, and it will be lit during a ceremony on November 28th. If you plan to visit Washington for the tree lighting ceremony, or at any other time during this holiday season, please reach out to my office for assistance with tickets and tours. It’s always wonderful to welcome fellow North Carolinians to the nation’s capital.

FBI and DHS Leaders on the Hill

The Homeland Security Committee held a blockbuster hearing last week, as DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and National Counterterrorism Center Director Christine Abizaid all testified.

This isn’t the first time I’ve questioned these three individuals. You may remember that last November I asked them about the possibility of the unchecked border crisis leading to a terrorist attack. They evaded the question then, and they now continue evading responsibility for the immigration and security problems the Biden administration has created.

Especially alarming was these witnesses’ collective refusal to acknowledge that we do not know who is crossing our border, and that the number of individuals on the terrorist watch list may only be a fraction of the suspected terrorists currently in our country.

Director Wray has made it clear that under his watch, the FBI is especially concerned with combatting “foreign malign influence, often in the form of censoring American citizens’ lawful online speech. In recent weeks, we’ve seen violent pro-Hamas protests and other heinous antisemitic actions in our nation’s cities. The FBI seems far more concerned with taking down Facebook posts than investigating violent threats.

The day after I questioned these witnesses, violent protestors barricaded the Democratic National Committee building just blocks from the Capitol, injuring Capitol Police officers and trapping Members of Congress in the building.

Our border is still wide open, and any terror cell that wishes to infiltrate our country can do so because Biden’s DHS refuses to end these damaging policies. Yet, Secretary Mayorkas says he will not change his actions or alter these policies. This is unconscionable.

WATCH: Mayorkas continues to deny reality

Impeaching Mayorkas

On Wednesday, I voted in favor of impeaching Secretary Mayorkas on the House floor. Unfortunately, a majority of members voted to refer the resolution to the Homeland Security Committee, where we are currently in the final phases of investigating Mayorkas for his refusal to enforce our immigration laws and his wanton disregard for the safety of our nation.

Our years-long border crisis is the direct result of Mayorkas refusing to enforce our immigration laws. I will continue to pursue his impeachment.

THROWBACK: Secretary Mayorkas is intentionally sabotaging the rule of law. This isn't a case of incompetence or mistakes. We must impeach him.

The Week in Weaponized Government

Our work to expose and root out the Censorship Industrial Complex continues apace. Journalist Michael Shellenberger, continuing his work on the Twitter Files and other free speech issues, reported on the latest files obtained in our investigations.

Combatting the Censorship Industrial Complex is often like playing whack-a-mole, as new government schemes to suppress free speech constantly rear their ugly heads. This past week, we learned about another censorship program, this time run through an AI startup.

On the government funding front, this week, Congress passed a short-term funding bill so that the government doesn’t shut down during the holidays. The House Freedom Caucus, of which I am a member, took an official position against the bill.

My goal is to have the government funded through an open and transparent process, with each funding bill voted on separately. Those negotiations continue, as we have passed a majority of those funding bills with only a handful more to go.
