    Dear John,

    Out-Of-Pocket Burdens

In the November issue of Health Affairs, Didem Bernard and colleagues at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality explore the multifaceted nature of health care financial pressures experienced by US families.

After examining the joint distribution of three financial problems: medical debt, out-of-pocket spending, and care delays related to cost, they find that 27 percent of surveyed adults younger than age sixty-five live in families with at least one of the three financial strains assessed.

When using a broader measure of financial strain, Bernard and coauthors find that 45 percent of adults younger than sixty-five reported financial strain.

These findings could offer context for policies that address the multidimensional nature of health care financial strain.
