John,

As Americans, we’re grateful for our freedom knowing that it has come to us at great cost. And, we know that securing that freedom is just as important today as it was yesterday and as it will be tomorrow.

So on this Friday, we’re recognizing our veterans and servicemembers who have made our American freedom a continued reality.

First off: it's the United States Marine Corps' birthday. 248 years of always faithful service to this nation deserves to be celebrated. To all the Devil Dogs in our lives – thank you.

Second: it's Veterans Day weekend, which means an opportunity to recognize and honor all those who have served our nation.

While we thank our veterans and servicemembers for their hard work and sacrifices, we do more when we back up our thanks by taking care of them and their families with a system that makes it easy to access the healthcare and benefits they’ve earned.

When my husband Matt came back from Iraq with a traumatic brain injury, I made it my mission to fight for veterans like him.

That mission led me to activism, then to law school – and now it's fueling my campaign for Congress.

So today and every day, thank a veteran for their service. But also, let’s make sure our government - the we - have their backs the other 364 days of the year.
